Haptic Metronome
Project Goal: Develop a haptic (vibratory) metronome for musicians and perform statistical testing of performance versus auditory metronome.
Client: REED Lab at USF · Field: Lab Research
Design Approach: During study of haptics and the body’s response to vibratory inputs, identified a gap in tools for rhythm training. Developed a wrist-worn device using vibration motors controlled by Arduino, with performance measured via a drum pad equipped with a piezoelectric sensor. Completed statistical analysis of user’s ability to maintain steady tempo with device versus auditory metronome and no metronome.
Results: Designed and built a functional haptic metronome that was tested on musicians. Experimental data demonstrated improved ability to maintain a steady rhythm. Accepted for poster presentation at IEEE EMBC 2024.
Skills Demonstrated: Concept Development · Electro-Mechanical System Development · Arduino Coding · Statistical Analysis
Note: Project completed during Master's program at University of South Florida.
